What Happens When Garage Door Cables Snap

What Happens When Garage Door Cables Snap image

A snapped cable doesn't just slow you down - it can make your garage door genuinely dangerous. When one cable goes, the door loses its balanced tension. That means it can drop unevenly, jam in the tracks, or come crashing down without warning. It's not a "wait and see" kind of problem.

We deal with broken and worn-out cables all the time, especially on commercial doors that see heavy daily use. These doors take a beating. Constant cycling, heavy panels, and years of tension put serious stress on the cables. When they start to fray or finally snap, the whole system is compromised.

The warning signs are usually pretty obvious once you know what to look for. Your door jerks when it opens or closes. One side looks lower than the other. It won't lift at all, or it moves but feels off. Any one of those tells us the cables need attention right away.

What we do is get the right cables on the door - properly tensioned and correctly routed - so everything moves the way it's supposed to. A commercial door that's back in balance runs smoother, puts less strain on the opener, and is safe to operate again. That's the goal every time.

Don't let a cable issue sit. The longer a door runs out of balance, the more damage it can do to the tracks, springs, and opener. A repair that could've been straightforward turns into a much bigger job. Getting it handled early is almost always the smarter call.
